User experience is a term used to describe the overall experience and
satisfaction a user has when using a product or system. It is an approach
to the design of products, services and environments based on a holistic
consideration of the user’s experience. This relatively new field has its
roots in the HCI discipline but it draws from a wide range of other
disciplines that include: cognitive psychology, behavioural science,
anthropological studies, ergonomics, product design, psychology and
marketing. This diverse range of influences makes User Experience
design a highly multi-disciplinary field.
We believe that ideas that inspire the richest experiences often occur at the
intersection of diverse creative disciplines. Within these creative crossovers,
multi-disciplinary thinking should flourish, forming a catalyst for the
organisation of successful and sustainable collaborations. When practitioners
from different backgrounds converge to share knowledge, negotiate ideas, solve
problems or reinvent old solutions; each expert may speak a different dialect
of the creative process. We believe, in order for this polyrhythmic communication
to be catalysed and seed new innovation an approach must be adopted that anchors
the user's experience at the centre of the process.
The Use8 community was founded on a shared interest to understand the overall
experience and satisfaction a user may have when using an artefact, system or
space. Guided by this philosophy we aim to unite students, academics, professionals
and organisations, across the creative and cultural industries, who also share an
interest in the user's experience. Our approach locates the community at the junction
of different creative disciplines that all come together to form an open sharespace;
incorporating diverse concepts and approaches.
Our vision is to promote user experience design education and best practice as a
strategic priority. Our mission is to translate that knowledge into the innovation
and design of better products, workflows and services; ultimately making the world
a better place full with rich experiences. We promote engagement and conversation
through hosting regular events and workshops that address particular themes of
interest in the UX discipline. In between hosting events we facilitate all our
activities through our private online network - Use8.net - the premier forum
for discussions in user experience.
